Grades 7-12 Dress Code

In Genesis 3:21, God provided clothes for Adam and Eve to cover their bodies. 1 Timothy 2:9 sets a standard of dress that states, “dress modestly, with decency and propriety.” Scripture also teaches that we are to be examples in every area of our lives, recognizing that we are representatives of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 4:12.) Therefore, the SCA Board has a policy that states students are to dress in a “neat and modest manner.”

For the purposes of student dress, we set the following guidelines.

Definition of Neat: Clean and orderly. Clothing should be in good repair; no holes, tears, or frays. All clothing must be proportioned to fit (not baggy, not tight). School clothing must not be something intended to be worn as active wear or athleisure (i.e. sweatpants, yoga pants, athletic shorts, pajama pants, etc.)

Definition of Modest: Avoiding the appearance of impropriety; not revealing too much of a person's body. Material should be opaque (not see-through). Shoulders, midriffs (front and back), and cleavage should be covered. No undergarments should be visible. Clothing must be proportioned to fit - not tight or baggy. (No need to adjust clothing while moving about hallways and classrooms.)

Tops

ALL SCA branded tops are approved for dress code. If not SCA branded, the following applies:

Shirts

  • Any solid color collared shirt without graphics, patterns, or wording.
  • SCA graphics on collared shirts are acceptable.
  • Small name brand or manufacturer logos are acceptable if less than 1 square inch.
  • Non-SCA branded T-shirts are not acceptable for dress code.

Sweaters

Definition of a sweater per SCA dress code is: a knitted or crocheted garment with sleeves worn over the upper body.

  • Any solid color sweater without graphics or wording; only small brand name or manufacturer logos — less than 1 square inch in size.
  • Sweaters, cardigans, and knit garments must be constructed of opaque fabric and may not feature large open-weave, crochet, mesh, or loosely knit patterns that allow undergarments or skin to be readily visible.

Sweatshirts/Hoodies/Jackets

  • Only SCA sweatshirts, hoodies, and jackets with the SCA logo are allowed.
  • Full-zip hoodies or jackets with the SCA logo may only be worn unzipped if a dress-code approved shirt is worn underneath.
  • Non-SCA winter coats may be worn while walking between classes but must be removed once inside the classroom.

Bottoms

  • Must have belt loops and be solid navy blue, black, tan, or gray.
  • Permitted bottoms include dress pants, capris, and shorts.
  • Shorts should extend below fingertip length when arms are relaxed at the sides.
  • Denim pants, capris, or shorts are allowed if they are black, gray, or tan.
  • Blue denim, sweatpants, leggings, joggers, athletic shorts, and other athleisure or athletic-style bottoms are not permitted.
  • Skirts/skorts (for female students): any navy blue, black, tan, khaki, or gray solid color skirt is allowed. When standing, the hemline of the skirt should fall at or below the kneecap. No slits above the kneecap.

Shoes

Any street shoes allowed. No slippers.

Special Events

Some special events may require a different dress code for special attire. For example, off-campus visits, dress-up days for teams/groups, and on-campus events. For these events, females may wear a dress that meets the length standard for skirts and coverage for tops. Males may wear a suit and tie.

For games and optional events, we ask that students dress in a neat and modest fashion.

Blue Crew Days Only

With current year's Blue Crew shirt, students may wear solid-colored (black, tan, grey, or navy blue) modest sweatpants, joggers, or blue jeans — an exception to the general athleisure rule above. (No rips, holes, tears, or leggings/yoga pants.)

Hair

No unusual or extreme hair styles; however, culturally significant hairstyles are permitted. Hats are not allowed.

Boys: Need to maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance, no facial hair, no makeup. Hair must stay out of the eyes and off the shoulders without the use of hair accessories, which are not allowed. Hair must not be dyed any non-natural hair color (except during spirit week and only if it can be completely washed out). Boys may only wear a short chain necklace inside dress code shirts. May wear no more than two finger rings. No visible tattoos or piercings. No nail polish.

Girls: May wear jewelry, but not large or excessive. May have up to two ear piercings in each ear, and one small nose stud or ring, but no other piercings. No visible tattoos. Hair must not be dyed any non-natural hair color (except during spirit week and only if it can be completely washed out).
