Mrs. Carruthers joined the SCA faculty in 2023. She is native to the Lee's Summit area and prior to staying home with her young children for the past eight years, she taught art at the high school and collegiate levels for nine years.
Watching children make art proves we were created to do just that - create. Children of all ages approach art making from within; without preconceived notions and purely based on intuition and feelings. As we age, this approach is directed more by outside influences and we tend to stop making art because it puts us in a vulnerable place. My greatest goal and joy as a teacher is to encourage students to work through those hurdles, understand we all experience them, and to help them develop a confidence that can carry them over struggles. They should be proud of all the work they create. It is a process and every mark counts--even the bad ones!
Art is a place for expression, mistakes, messes, and beauty. It is so much more than the artwork you get in the end and is literally in everything we use, see, and experience. Art becomes a little less intimidating when you understand that no matter what you create, the process was created for you and you were created for the process--all roads lead to a closer relationship to the One who created it all. Art is a wonderful way to bring people together and is a catalyst for learning, thought, and connection.
Mrs. Carruthers is also a practicing artist. She works primarily as a painter and has work in public and private collections alike. Outside of making art and teaching, she enjoys all things on the lake, from sailing to surfing and skiing, but mostly spending time with her husband and four children.
