The mission of the SCA Theatre Department is to inspire students to achieve their God-given potential in theatre - including both acting and technical expertise - through excellent productions and classes in a professional and challenging environment. In junior high, students may take Junior High Drama (1 semester) and Advanced Junior High Drama (1 semester). In high school, students have three year-long choices available to them - Theatre Arts I, Theatre Arts II and Theatre Performance. In the area of forensics and debate, SCA offers a variety of classes in both junior high and high school. Josh Baker teaches and also coaches the junior and senior high forensics and debate teams. To learn more about forensics, please e-mail Mr. Baker.
In addition to drama and forensics classes, SCA Theatre has two main productions each year in which students may participate, either as actors or as part of the student-led technical crew. Each year there is at least one large cast play, and every other year, there is a musical. In the past, SCA has produced a wide variety of comedies, dramas, and musicals including It's a Wonderful Life, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Coarse Acting Show (14/15); Meet Me in St. Louis and Harvey (13/14); Acts of God, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, and Fantastic Mr. Fox (12/13); Hello Dolly! and God's Favorite (11/12); Korczak's Children, 12 Angry Jurors, and M*A*S*H (10/11); Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella and Sabrina Fair (09/10); Peter Pan & Wendy, The Dining Room, and Pride Prejudice (08/09); My Fair Lady and Towards Zero (07/08); Diary of Anne Frank and Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing (06/07); The Foreigner and The Sound of Music (05/06); An Ideal Husband and God's Favorite (04/05); and Anne of Green Gables and The Coarse Acting Show (03/04). Each year, the most advanced students present One Act Night, a collection of student-directed (and often student-written) short plays. In 2012, the Theatre Arts II and Worship classes united to write the book, music, and lyrics for Shelter(ed): A Student-Written Musical. Please e-mail SCA Theatre Director Emily Stam with any questions. She would love to tell you more about SCA's exciting theatre program.
